Our Story

Hello & welcome to Pickwick Books!

I'd love to tell you our story....

It all started in 1995 when Des Brady first opened Pickwick's, on the historical corner of Mill and Dundas, in Waterdown Ontario.

'Mr. Pickwick' proudly served the area's avid readers for 15 years, amassing a large and eclectic variety of books within the building's grey stone walls. In 2010 Pickwick Books had the Dupee family running the shop. They were loyal customers that didn't want to see their beloved book shop close when its original owner, Des, retired.

In 2016, when Chris and Lori found raising a young family, having their own careers and running a bookshop was a bit too much, Cheryl Kaufman stepped in. Having driven past the bookshop and being drawn into it, she was very excited to learn that it was looking for a new owner, so she bought it after her first visit.

And that brings us to today.

In January 2023, after navigating through the pandemic and keeping Pickwick's alive (thanks in part to the brilliant book box subscriptions), Cheryl decided it was time for her next chapter, and that is where my story begins. After 15 years in the corporate world, I wanted to slow things down and be my own boss. I have always been an avid reader and love to talk about books. I grew up frequenting used bookstores with my mom - they are filled with magic, are better for the environment and easier on your wallet - and I hope to pass that magic on to everyone that comes through our doors.

The passion at Pickwick's has always been to find good homes for good books, and I am excited to continue that tradition in historic Waterdown Village. I hope you will visit us soon.

Happy reading!
